In my career, I have had the chance of learning a lot about myself, about others, about personal excellence, ambition and how to set and reach goals. The Institute of You is the result of all that. So I thought it would be interesting to summarise in one image all the pieces of advice I ever received and applied (at least tried to apply).

In hindsight, I can say this is the essence of any success I ever had. Check how many you already do, and what pieces of advice you’d love to start with. Pick one, two, three maximum, and explore how you could use them in your day-to-day. Take some notes of the actions you thought about if it helps.

Because these are the best pieces of career advice I ever got and ever applied to myself, I already wrote about most of them on The Institute of You. If you want to get more information about any of them, check below to see if there’s already a post about it. I’ll make sure to continue writing about the other tips in the future and add the links here.

Be curious (Read more)

Look at yourself first

Say “no”

Ask more questions (Read more)

Assume positive intent

Take initiative (Read more)

Ask for forgiveness, not permission

Understand your natural style (Read more)

Be mindful and in the present (Read more)

Speak up when needed

Don’t take on others’ problems

Be the colleague you’d want to have (Read more)

Talk less, listen more (Read more)

Find yourself a great role model (Read more)

Learn something new every day (Read more)

Ask for feedback regularly (Read more)

Take ownership of your growth (Read more)

Create development opportunities (Read more)

Build a personal brand

Know what you are good at

Set boundaries

Find balance (Read more)

Don’t let others decide for you (Read more)

Find your purpose (Read more)

Create a plan (Read more)

Delegate

Set clear expectations

Communicate better

Share what you do

Help others

Avoid negativity

Take risks that don’t feel like risks (Read more)

Don’t suck up to the boss (Read more)

Start with the hard task first

Be creative (Read more)

Live by your core values (Read more)

Have a personal mission (Read more)

Get a coach (Read more)

Manage your emotions (Read more)

Invest in training (Read more)

Don’t stay late at work (Read more)

Don’t postpone anything

Develop your leadership skills (Read more)

Listen to your manager (Read more)

Don’t try too hard to fit in

Embrace change

Take a break (Read more)

Control your body language

Be ambitious

Do something (Read more)

The essence of personal development, and what makes us more or less receptive to the idea that we have never fully explored our potential, is our approach to life. It sounds a bit banal, but it is the reality. The way we see life, through the half-full or half-empty glass, the way we approach relationships, the way we face challenges and the way we grow shape the journey we are taking, and the successes we will achieve.

Fixed mindset vs. growth mindset

Take two different people in the same situation, right after being denied the same promotion and given constructive feedback as to why they didn’t get it.

Person A is hurt and confused because he was sure the was going to get it. He is angry and dismisses the feedback. He leaves the room furious, and takes the rest of the day off, and even the day after, because he can’t handle being at work. When he comes back to work, he will not improve anything, as he does not like the feedback he received.

Person B is hurt and disappointed he didn’t get the role, but he appreciates the feedback he was given because it will help him get the promotion next time. He asks questions and got to work on an action plan immediately to be ready for the next opportunity.

What do you think is going to happen to Person A and Person B? The former is going to stagnate, while the latter will grow.

What is the difference between these two people? Their approach. Their mindset. Person A has a fixed mindset. Person B has a growth mindset.

Fixed mindset

People with a fixed mindset are content with what they were born with. They put efforts only when they have to, and it is very often done with negativity, because it is harder than what they are used to. They don’t have a lot left to learn, that is why they take feedback as criticism and reject being challenged on what they think is the reality. They are afraid of failure as it will make them feel very bad and will make them look vulnerable to others. They tend to see the success of others as a threat to theirs.

Growth mindset

On the other hand, people with a growth mindset embrace their weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and see them as growth opportunities rather than failures. They acknowledge that they don’t know what they don’t know, so they try new things to discover more. They tend to manage change with positivity, as they see the big picture and want to test things before having a definitive opinion. They are resilient, and seek learning in defeats. Their sense of self-awareness is usually high. They ask for and listen to feedback. They are inspired by the success of others and enjoy the process of getting there.

How to develop a growth mindset

1 | Accept that change is a great thing

In the first 20 years of your life, you have changed a lot. There aren’t just physical differences between a toddler, a child, a teenager and a young adult. There are a lot more aptitudes, practice, learnings, habits, that have been taught to you and that you have also learned on your own. There is no reason why once at the adult age you don’t change either. Think about the new people you meet, the jobs you have, the travels you do. These experiences add to your journey and make you see things with a new perspective. Measure the impact these changes have had on you, and you will see that you are enjoying change a lot more than you thought.

2 | Try something new

Once you have accepted the inherent beauty of change, you will feel more comfortable trying something new. It can be small, it can be big – the most important is that you do something new, and you see how you react to the uncertainty. What can you learn about yourself?

3 | Enjoy the journey

Find what you want to do, and enjoy the journey to get there. You will need to learn a lot if you want to go far. It’s not supposed to be easy, it’s supposed to be meaningful.

4 | Build self-awareness and accept your weaknesses

Here are some helpful articles already published on The Institute of You that will support you in creating self-awareness and building resilience:

Be better at receiving feedback

Redefine what “comfort zone” means to you

Coach yourself

Find out about your multiple intelligences and your learning style.

The Mindset Continuum

The visual below will give you more details on the different levels of mindsets and will show you what a higher mindset looks like.

Source: James Anderson

Meditation is one of these things you need to try before having a definite opinion on the matter. I tried out of curiosity. I wanted to see if it would help me stay in the present and be more mindful. Spoiler alert: it did. Now that I am over 100 sessions, it’s time to share what else I took from it.

My Headspace stats in 8 months

It’s important to find a style of meditation that suits you

You won’t be able to practice meditation on a regular basis if you are not following someone you enjoy listening to. I couldn’t recommend enough Headspace for beginners, which is the app that I’m still using. It will help you get familiar with breathing as well as meditation techniques like visualisation and noting. I shared in a previous blog post a Ted Talk of its founder, Andy Puddicombe.

When you are more at ease in your practice, you can move to Insights Timer which will give you access to more meditation experts.

It’s hard to stick to things at the beginning

No matter how hard you try, the beginning is going to be difficult and is the most critical period to get a habit going. For me it wasn’t enough to tell myself “it’ll get better with practice”. I had to create different levels so I could imagine my progress like in a video game. In this case, my levels were:

Discovery

The “why am I doing this” phase

Not beginner anymore, but not there yet

The “I think I’m getting used to it” phase

Starting to enjoy it

Mindful and present most of the time

Able to do meditation outside my home

Addicted

The second and third levels are critical and are where I very often stop new habits I’m trying to create. What changed this time for me was that I knew there was more to it than the initial struggle. If I failed at being focused and present in one session, it didn’t mean I had to throw all the previous ones I did well and avoid doing it again.

You become better at anything with practice

Meditation is like a skill. The more you practice it, the easier it will get. During the first few sessions, I was restless. My body was moving, my mind was wandering, and it required a lot of effort to remain still and focused. Some days, 10 minutes of meditation looked like an eternity. Now, I meditate 15 to 20 minutes per day in the bus without feeling distracted (most of the time).

It’s okay to fail

One of the biggest things I took away from meditation is that it’s okay not to be great at a new thing. The most important is what you’re going to do about it: are you going to accept it without judging yourself, or are you going to give up? Do you really want to do this, or is it just a fad? I was determined to make it work for me because I knew I needed it and would eventually love it.

There isn’t an emotion that taking a deep breath can’t soothe

I learned that if you are feeling frustrated, sad, angry, heartbroken, stressed, bored, and/or overwhelmed, taking a few deep breaths will put you back on track. When I feel that way but can’t meditate on the spot, I tell myself to take the deepest breath of the day. It makes that moment more special. It will be one out of thousands breaths, but it will be the deepest one.

Patience rises inwardly, not outwardly

It is by far the most important thing I ever learned from meditation. It taught me that change comes inwardly, and that I shouldn’t expect people to do it for me. My feelings are a reaction that I choose to have by seeing things as relevant or not. If I get impatient, only I control it and only I can make myself calmer.

Aside from helping me manage my impatience on a daily basis, the impact it has on challenges I face, but also my relationships and my coaching practice is colossal. I can now see clearly when someone comes to me hoping to pass their problems onto me instead of owning up to them. In the past I used to make these problems my own. I now understand and accept that if only I can manage myself, only the others can manage themselves. It is very empowering.

To check more articles on mindfulness, click here.

Knowing your predominant intelligences is a great first step towards increased self-awareness. You can now see why you prefer doing certain things in certain environments, rather than others. Now how do you apply it to new experiences? You combine your knowledge on intelligences to your preferred learning style.

Honey and Mumford’s Learning Styles

Learning styles were developed by Peter Honey and Alan Mumford, based on the work of David Kolb who created a model of learning in the 80s. Kolb’s model proposed that we all learn in a cyclical way:

Honey and Mumford initiatied the idea that while we go through a circle as we learn something, individuals prefer to start in different places of the circle and might spend more or less time in each stage. Based on this, they identified four distinct learning styles or preferences: Activist, Theorist; Pragmatist and Reflector. In their book Manual of Learning Styles, they wrote that there are 3 main benefits in discovering your learning style, your starting point:

“Become smarter at getting a better fit between learning opportunities and the way you learn best. This makes your learning easier, more effective and more enjoyable. It saves you tackling your learning on a hit-and-miss basis. Equipped with information about your learning preferences, you’ll have many more hits and fewer misses.”

“Expand the ‘band width’ of experiences from which you derive benefit. Becoming an all-round learner, increases your versatility and helps you learn from a wide variety of different experiences – some formal, some informal, some planned and some spontaneous.”

“Improve your learning skills and processes. Increased awareness of how you learn, opens up the whole process to self-scrutiny and improvement. Learning to learn is your most important capability since it provides the gateway to everything else you want to develop.”

The awareness of your learning style is an amazing opportunity to understand yourself better but also seek out new opportunities. Want to do the test Honey and Mumford developed?

The 4 learning styles

Activists

Activists involve themselves fully and without bias in new experiences. They enjoy the here and now and are happy to be dominated by immediate experiences. They are open-minded, not skeptical, and this tends to make them enthusiastic about anything new. Their philosophy is ‘I’ll try anything once’. They tend to act first and consider the consequences afterwards. Their days are filled with activity. They tackle problems by brainstorming. As soon as the excitement from activity has died down they are busy looking for the next. They tend to thrive on the challenge of new experiences but are bored with the implementation and longer-term consolidation. They are gregarious people constantly involving themselves with others, but in doing so they seek to center all activities on themselves.

Reflectors

Reflectors like to stand back to ponder new experiences and observe them from many different perspectives. They collect data, both first and from others and prefer the think it through thoroughly before coming to a conclusion. The thorough collection and analysis of data about experience and events is what counts so they tend to postpone reaching definitive conclusions for as long as possible. Their philosophy is to be cautious. They are thoughtful people who like to consider all possible angles and implications before making a move. They prefer to take a back seat in meetings and discussions. They enjoy observing other people in action. They listen to others and get the drift of the discussion before making their own points. They tend to adopt a low profile and have a slightly distant, tolerant unruffled air about them. When they act, it is part of a wide picture which includes the past as well as the present and others’ observations as well as their own.

Theorists

Theorists adapt and integrate observations into complex but logically sound theories. They think problems through in a vertical, step-by-step logical way. They assimilate disparate facts into coherent theories. They tend to be perfectionists who won’t rest easy until things are tidy and fit into a rational scheme. They like to analyse and synthesise. They are keen on basic assumptions, principles, theories, models and systems thinking. The philosophy prizes rationality and logic. ‘If it’s logical, it’s good’. Questions they frequently ask are “Does this make sense?”, “How does this fit with that?”, “What are the basic assumptions?” They tend to be detached, analytical and dedicated to rational objectivity rather than anything subjective or ambiguous. Their approach to problems is consistently logical. This is their ‘mental set’ and they rigidly reject anything that doesn’t fit with it. They prefer to maximise certainty and feel uncomfortable with subjective judgements, lateral thinking and anything flippant.

Pragmatists

Pragmatists are keen to try out new ideas, theories and techniques to see if they work in practice. They positively search out new ideas and take the first opportunity to experiment with applications. They are the sort of people who return from a management course brimming with new ideas that they want to try out in practice. They like to get on with things and act quickly and confidently on ideas that attract them. They tend to be impatient with ruminating and open-ended discussions. They are essentially practical, down to earth people who like making practical decisions and solving problems. They respond to problems and opportunities ‘as a challenge’. Their philosophy is: ‘there is always a better way’ and ‘if it works its good’

What’s next

Think about ways you are currently learning new things:

How could you shift your method of learning to use more your preferred style?

When you use your preferred style, how does that make you feel?

What is your approach to new experiences?

How can you combine your main intelligences to your preferred learning style?

Sources:

https://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/gradschool/training/eresources/teaching/theories/honey-mumford

https://www.futureschool.com/blog/learning-styles-activist-pragmatist-theorist-reflector-one-child/

http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/styles/honey_mumford.html

https://www.skillsyouneed.com/learn/learning-styles.html

They say “ignorance is bliss” and they are right. You can’t be troubled by what you don’t know. But what happens when you become aware of this ignorance? You still don’t know much but now you are conscious of it. A gap between you and this thing you don’t know anything about appears to you. You can’t ignore it.

When ignorance becomes opportunity

You create an amazing opportunity when you have the perception of lacking something. You find a new focus, a new purpose. Not only you are more confident saying “I don’t know”, you also ask more specific questions on the topic. You research it when you have time, you even make time for it, you might read more, find courses or watch talks from experts. What am I talking about?

A new language you want to learn,

A new tool because you want to upgrade your technical skills,

A new skill to develop because you’re not good at public speaking,

A random subject you’ve always been curious about, like Virtual Reality, Data Science, or Abstract Painting,

A failure you will know how to avoid next time,

A success you will know how to do better next time.

When opportunity becomes growth

When you accept that you don’t know everything, you open yourself to new areas of life and other people. Your way is not the only way anymore. You become the learner, the student. You ask more questions. You build more rapport with others when you admit your own limits. Your influence grows as you learn and involve others in that process.

Think about the journey metaphor. Growth comes when you move forward, one foot in front of the other. You can measure growth with one simple question: “am I the same person I was years ago?”. It’s very unlikely. Between the you now and the you before, there are new experiences, successes, and failures, and all the learnings resulting from them, which could show on different levels:

You are more mature and professional,

You are more calm and serene,

You put things into perspective,

Your goals are clearer,

You are doing things you never thought you would do in the past,

Any other behavioural change resulting from what you learned.

When growth becomes fulfillment

fulfillment (British fulfilment), noun, /fo͝olˈfilmənt/ /fʊlˈfɪlmənt/

1 The achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted.
1.1 Satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one’s abilities or character.

Doesn’t /fʊlˈfɪlmənt/ seem more complete, more specific than “happiness” as a fundamental goal? In comparison, the Oxford dictionary defines “happiness” as the state of being happy (very helpful, thanks) and “happy” as feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. It almost looks trivial, superficial, no?

So next time you want to answer the question “what is important for you in life?” with “being happy” – don’t. Instead, answer with what would bring that state of being happy. Is it the achievement of something desired? Is it the result of fully developing your abilities? Then what is that “something desired”? What does “fully developing” mean, how do you do it, and what “abilities” are you talking about? More questions, for a change.

You start by becoming aware of something you lack, you learn about it, you open up to new opportunities, you grow as an individual and you become fulfilled as a result. So the more you learn, the more opportunities you get, the more you grow and the more fulfilled you become.

If you read the article about my 2017 challenge, you saw that I attended an massing open online course last February. For those of you who never heard about “MOOC”, this post is for you. For those of you who know what it is but never looked for it, this post is also for you (I thought of everyone).

Massive open online courses are an amazing product of the Internet and the resource you need when you want to learn new things.

What is a MOOC?

A MOOC is an online course open to all and available on distance learning platforms. They are composed of videos as well as lecture transcripts, exercises, reading materials and sometimes forums where students can exchange among themselves.

It’s much more than a video of a professor talking for an hour. It’s the online version of a university lecture. They provide the same content to online students without requiring them to sit in an amphitheater. Some are just a few videos short spread on a few weeks while others propose full programs to go into the topic in depth. In some cases, the students can get a certificate or validate credits for a degree. Most of the platforms collaborate with prestigious universities who have put some of their content online.

The 5 best MOOC websites

1. Coursera

Two professors from Stanford University founded Coursera in 2016. Since then the website has built partnerships with University of Pennsylvania, Duke University and UC Davis, to name a few. They also partner with organisations like Google Cloud or National Geographic Society. They provide classes on various topics on business and sciences. Users can attend one course at a time or follow a “specialization” where multiple courses are gathered to extensively cover one topic.

Cost: the classes are free but a paid option exists for additional features.

2. Future Learn

Future Learn is the leading MOOC platform in the UK and was created by the Open University, which was already offering distance learning. They partner with many universities in Europe and Australia, as well as foundations and organisations like Cancer Research UK and UNESCO. The website proposes courses, programs and full postgraduate degrees. Topics vary from business to environment and nature.

Cost: courses are free but there is a paid option to upgrade to get the assessment and university credits.

3. EdX

edX is a non-profit organisation created in 2012 by MIT and Harvard. It counts among their partners Berkley, Caltech, University of Toronto as well as numerous European and Asian universities. The site proposes series of Master’s-level courses called “MicroMasters” which are credit-eligible and may be able to accelerate a Master’s Degree. The subjects are the ones you would expect in a university, ranging from biology to law.

Cost: classes are free but you can buy a certificate for $49 (optional). MicroMasters are free to try, getting the credits will cost up to $600.

4. Udacity

Udacity‘s catalog focuses on software engineering, data science and web development. It also proposes “Nano Degrees” and has developed a partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology whose online classes are part of their Master’s degree. Udacity also partners with tech companies like Google, Amazon and Facebook on videos about virtual reality or machine learning.

Cost: courses are free, however nano degrees cost between $200 per month to $800 per term (3 months).

5. Codecademy

Codecademy is another platform to learn how to code HTML, CSS, Python, PHP and Javascript. You can also learn how to build a website, how to deploy it or communicate with SQL databases.

Cost: free. There is an upgrade for $20 per month to get additional features

2 other great platforms that are not MOOC per se

6. Lynda.com

Lynda.com doesn’t partner with universities to create its content. However many consider it as one of the first websites to start hosting video tutorials and training over 20 years ago. The sites offers a wide ranger of video formats on various topics like business, photography, blogging, marketing, Excel, etc.

Cost: first ten days are free, then there is a monthly fee of €15 to have unlimited access to all videos.

7. Udemy

Like Lynda.com, Udemy is not a MOOC as it partners with experts rather than universities. Topics are as wide as Lynda.com and cover from business to personal development, music and languages.

Cost: some courses are free but the best ones are not. Price varies between €20 and €200.

At the beginning of 2017, I decided this year would be the year of me. It wasn’t a New Year’s resolution but rather a challenge I had been thinking about for a while. That certainly explains why I stuck to it unlike all New Year’s resolutions ever made in my life. The year of me meant changing my priorities so I could focus on what I was good at, what I enjoyed doing the most and the skills I needed to learn. In 2016 I had worked on myself to identify all of that, so in 2017 I wanted to see concrete actions.

The challenge was to do at least one thing for my personal development every month. It doesn’t seem much, but it was more than what I had ever done in the past. And it worked. In the last 8 months, I have managed to stay motivated and I have even done more than I was expecting (this blog, for instance).

What I did each month

January: I did extensive research on coaching accreditation and courses as well as university degrees in psychology, and defined which one I wanted to do.

February: I completed a course on Psychology at Work on Coursera. This was the first time I was doing a massive open online course (MOOC).

March: I started meditating 10 minutes every day using the Headspace app.

April: I saw the first massive benefit of meditation after doing a track on patience in April. I found a mantra to control my impatience and let go of what I cannot control in a few deep breaths. I also increased my practice to 20 minutes a day.

May: I attended a leadership retreat and saw a talk from Drew Dudley that made me focus on my values and what they meant for me.

June: I attended the first training session on coaching. Not only did I learn amazing things but I was also coached almost every day on real topics. Let’s say it made me even more self-aware and passionate about it.

July: I read The Complete Handbook of Coaching and Clean Language : Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds. I also bought (a lot of) books on developmental coaching, leadership coaching, positive psychology, powerful questioning and mentoring.

August: I have done quite a few things so far this month. I started a log of my own observations as a coach on what I do well and what I can do better during sessions. This helps me to improve my practice faster. I subscribed to Harvard Business Review. The 6 free articles per month hadn’t been enough for a while, so I kept saving for later the ones I couldn’t read. I ended up with over 100 articles to read, so it was time. I finished The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson, which was very good. Oh, and I also started this blog.

September: I traveled to Bath, UK, to complete the second training on coaching.

October: I downloaded the app “HabitBull” to start new habits, and it’s working very well: I’m tracking 3 daily habits of meditation, yoga, and avoiding sugar. I also wrote a series of blog posts on coaching on the blog, which was an amazing way for me to go back to my notes, research the field of coaching even more, and share what I love the most. I learned a lot more in the process.

November: so many things! I’m doing an open book exam of 25 questions and 3 case studies in order to pass my coaching course. I also had a few mentoring hours in my coaching practice. Last but not least, I bought my first MOOC on Udemy to become a Mindfulness Practitioner. I have started the course but this is not my priority for now as I need to finish the exam first. I continue spending 30 minutes to an hour every day to take care of myself through meditation and yoga, and I’m actually starting to need that.

December: I continued doing daily yoga and meditation, and I got my Mindfulness Practitioner certification.
